February: A Month Dedicated to the Holy Family

Posted by Father Joe Connelly on

As Catholics, each month of the year carries a particular spiritual theme to help us grow in faith and draw closer to God. February is traditionally dedicated to the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. This focus invites us to reflect on the sanctity of family life and the virtues modeled by the Holy Family in their daily lives.

The dedication of February to the Holy Family grew out of the Church’s emphasis on family as the “domestic church.” While this devotion gained prominence in the 19th century, its roots stretch back to the earliest Catholic’s that venerated the hidden yet holy lives of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. In 1893, Pope Leo XIII formally approved the Feast of the Holy Family, and it became a universal celebration under Pope Benedict XV in 1921. Although this feast is now celebrated within the Christmas season, the entire month of February remains an opportunity to contemplate the Holy Family’s significance and example.

Lessons from the Holy Family

  1. Faith and Trust in God: From the Annunciation to the flight into Egypt, Mary and Joseph displayed profound faith in God’s plan. Their trust reminds us to surrender our own worries and uncertainties to the Lord, especially in family life.
  2. Obedience and Sacrifice: St. Joseph, as the protector of Jesus and Mary, faithfully carried out his role with quiet strength. His example inspires us to fulfill our duties with love and selflessness, even when unnoticed.
  3. Mutual Love and Support: The love shared among Jesus, Mary, and Joseph radiates the beauty of authentic family life. Their unity in purpose and mutual support show us how to build strong bonds of love in our own families.

Living the Devotion

Honoring the Holy Family in February can take many forms, from meditating on their lives to incorporating special prayers into your daily routine. Here are some suggestions:

  • Consecrate Your Family: Consider consecrating your family to the Holy Family, asking for their guidance and protection in all that you do.
  • Pray the Litany of the Holy Family: This beautiful prayer highlights the virtues of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph and serves as a guide for living them out.
  • Attend Mass as a Family: Participate in the Eucharist together, offering your joys and struggles to Christ as the center of your home.
  • Reflect on Scripture: Meditate on passages like Luke 2:22-40 (the Presentation in the Temple) or Luke 2:41-50 (the finding of Jesus in the temple) to deepen your appreciation of the Holy Family’s example.

A Timely Reflection

In a world where family life faces many challenges, turning to the Holy Family for intercession and inspiration is more relevant than ever. The dedication of February to the Holy Family reminds us that holiness begins at home. As we journey through this month, may we open our hearts to the grace of God and strive to make our homes places of peace, love, and holiness.

In Christ,

Fr. Joe Connelly
