Pastoral Pearls: Charity Brings Happiness
How marvelous would it be if, at the end of the day, each of us could say: today I have performed an act of charity toward others! ~ Pope Francis
I find it funny the way that these words were translated. What jumped out at me was the word “performed.” When I hear that word, I think of “acting”- in front of an audience, for applause or Academy Awards. That seems out of character for Pope Francis, because he is never about getting people’s attention for doing good. He does so many good things for people, quietly. It is just part of who he is, not for show. So, in the spirit of Pope Francis, I am going to embrace the challenge of doing things quietly.
As we enter into Lent now, it just seems to fit with what the three pillars of Lent tell me: Give Alms (what is needed) to those in need; Fast from all (food and beyond) that may be frivolous; and Pray (always.) Our instructions, through scripture during this season, are to do all these things quietly, without drawing attention, out of love for and solidarity with Jesus.
Pope Francis puts kind of a fun spin on things, reminding me that charity – doing something unexpected for someone who may need help – can make us both happy! Though I can always use a reminder, in my own experience I often find that when I begin thinking I am doing something for someone else, I am surprised by how much I get out of it – joy, accomplishment, and insight from that person. How humbling! But what a gift from God – a win-win. I don’t really do things for people for this reason, yet what a fun surprise. Thank you, Jesus!
So, in the coming days of Lent, I would like to ask myself each day: What can I do for someone today that will increase their happiness... and see what happens.
Loving God, show me who most needs a boost in their happiness this day (and each one going forward).
Holy Spirit, fill me with the right inspiration for how to best to meet their need and make them happy.
May I embrace and enjoy this wonderful challenge!
~ Amen
